Atmospheric Corrosion Inspection & Coating Condition Surveys
What is Corrosion? Corrosion is the state of natural deterioration in metals caused by oxidation or a chemical reaction with its environment. The degree of corrosion depends on numerous factors including different surfaces and environments. An atmospheric corrosion inspection and AMPP/NACE coating condition survey will tell you how corrosion protections are holding up.
AMPP/NACE Coating Condition Surveys are performed by a certified inspector.
A Site-Visit consists of:
-
Review the condition of existing coatings
-
Determine the coating condition
-
Determine the severity of corrosion based on surface condition according to ISO 4628-3 / ASTM D 610 standards. Capital Inspectors custom designs a scale based off client’s specifications.
-
Characterize rust distribution according to SSPC-VIS 2 Standard Method of Evaluating Degree of Rusting on Painted Steel Surfaces.
-
Perform adhesion tests
-
Perform Dry Film Thickness (DFT) readings in a manner that complies with SSPC PA-2, Measurement of Dry Coating Thickness with Magnetic Gauges.
Comprehensive reporting of all findings is compiled into a detailed Atmospheric Corrosion Inspection and Coating Condition Survey Report.
Certified Coating Inspection
Is it just coating or is it corrosion protection? Coatings are clear or pigmented film-forming materials that protect the surface to which they are applied from the effects of the environment. This is where a coating condition survey performed by a certified coating inspector comes in handy.
A certified coating inspector’s surface preparation and application experience prevents job errors, saving valuable time and money for all parties involved.
Duties a Coating Inspector performs:
-
Protect the Asset
-
Comprehensive Documentation of weather conditions, dewpoints, relative humidity, surface temperatures, anchor profiles, substrate cleanliness, and batch numbers
-
PA -2 dry film thickness readings
-
Time stamped photography of each phase
-
Project acceptance
Capital Inspectors coined the term Coating Management as an additional service.
